Madd Style Owner Chris Bensko on Shopping Local
Chris Bensko with Madd Style customer and local businesswoman Mary Roberts.
So often we are asked, even begged, to “shop local, shop local, shop local!” And yes, this small business owner is shouting the same chorus!
But this time, I would like to turn the tables and ask…does Madd Style shop local?
I feel it is a total farce to own a small business without supporting other small businesses in your area. Clearly, anything can be bought online with a few clicks or swipes, and presto! It arrives.
But I’ve learned that building my business takes a community, a local community:
- I purchase my insurance from a local agent, and my money stays here in Fort Collins.
- All of my printing services are done in town with graphic artists and business owners that live here.
- And we carry many Colorado-local brands in our shop (see photo shoot, below).
It gives me peace of mind to know I am helping community members pay their mortgages and hire more employees.
Obviously shopping local matters to us here at Madd Style. But we know it matters to our customers, too.
So I’ve asked a favorite customer and local businesswoman, Mary Roberts, to tell us why she shops local. And while we’re at it, why not have a photoshoot?

Northern Colorado Realtor, Roots Real Estate
Ever since I found Madd Style, steps from my regular local coffee cart, I have sworn off the national clothing shops who think older women ought to stick to chenille, white cotton/polyester blouses, and a string of pearls. With help from the gals at Madd Style, my wardrobe now expresses me—quirky, interesting, fun, and even hip in my mid-60s. They get to know their clientele and keep their requests in mind when they go on a buying trip.
I’m a real estate agent and need to look professional while wearing comfortable clothes that express the more casual attitude that Colorado represents. And I get to support a local shop who in turn supports the local economy. I tell everyone I know to get on over to Madd Style and quit trying to figure out what to wear. As soon as you walk into their shop, you’ll know.
It’s Sweater Weather!
Sweater weather is here, and this season we’re seeing every possible variety: cowl-necks, sleek and slimming cuts, big and cozy styles, and sweater vests and coats. Look for cowl-necks cropping up in lighter tops and ponchos, too.
Even though Coloradans live in layers, it doesn’t make us frumpy.
Layer shirts, sweaters, and jewelry for a polished look like Mary’s.
Add an edge with a pair of rock ‘n roll skinny jeans in black.
Bonus: black jeans often are work appropriate.
Finish the look with a pop of color, like with the red beaded necklaces Mary’s wearing.
About Mary Mary Roberts, M.A., is a realtor, writer, editor, advocate, and Madd Style enthusiast enjoying all things local in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Dig Into Denim!
Yes denim is still a thing!
Denim button-up skirts worn below the knee evoke a sexy 70s trend.
Chris makes it modern with a bare leg and a tall boot.
Layer on a lightweight cowl neck shirt under a cozy sweater-knit vest.
We love this vest’s sueded panels and cozy shearling detail.
Top this look with a black-felted floppy hat for modern flair.
